Singing We Did On Our Way

Into Nebraska’s thatches of grass:
jade, olive, and lime.

Denver blurred. Beer and candy bars.
There was nothing we wanted much.

We made love at truck stops.
The semis interrupted like meddling relatives.

That was it for family
and I prayed for you to offer me a home.

In Utah, we tossed wedding rice
across the open sky.
